The second YMA event of the year was held at the National Ploughing Championships in Athy. The format for this event was similar to the Elphin workshop with points being allocated to stock judging, handling and an interview at which each competitor had to give the reasons for their placings in the stock judging.

Miss Shirley Busteed of the Irish Farmers Journal had kindly agreed to be one of these judges. As always the competition was of a very high standard with the final scores being very close. Following on from her success in Elphin Elaine Clancy once again won the Junior section with Michael Malone taking second and Kieran Golden taking third. Stephen Lynch won the Senior section; April Higgins came second with Andrew McInerney taking third place. Stephen Lynch and April Higgins took the final two places on the National Team.
