The Irish team had a very enjoyable and educational trip to the international YMA competition held in Staffordshire last weekend. The YMA competition incorporates stock judging, explaining your stock judging and show ring handling and is held annually between teams from England, Scotland, Wales Northern Ireland and Ireland. This years competition was held at the English winter fair at the Staffordshire county grounds and gave the competitors a chance to see the cream of British commercial cattle. The fair also had sections for sheep, pigs and carcass competitions for beef, lamb, pig, and poultry which was an interesting spectacle.
The Irish team of Marie Louise Ryan Thurles Co. Tipperary, Sean Moroney Corofin Co Clare, Melissa Tarpey Elphin Co Roscommon and Murt Ryan Thurles Co Tipperary all performed excellently. The competition was won by the English team with Northern Ireland and Scotland tied second and Ireland a very close fourth. Michelle Tarpey also competed in the individual section and put in an excellent performance.
The team was accompanied by Paul Sykes, Michael and Anne Marie Gunn. The YMA would like to thank all those who helped the group during the year particularly Kevin Bohan, Clive Jennings, Richard O’Beirne John McInerney and the parents of the members who brought them to workshops and competitions
