A team of young Limousin enthusiasts went to Northern Ireland on Saturday 13th September and took part in a hugely successful YMA stock judging and handling event. This event was the Anglo-Irish Stock Judging and Handling Competition, the venue was the Moira Sales arena in Co. Down and the competition included two other teams of like minded young Limousin breeders from Northern Ireland and mainland UK.

Representing Ireland were three young breeders who won the right to represent their country at the Irish Limousin Cattle Society YMA National Workshop at the Ardlea Herd three weeks previous. They were:

  • Tom Hickey Kilcommon Co. Tipperary,
  • Mark Barrett Belmullet Co. Sligo,
  • Sharon Rothwell Tinahely, Co. Wicklow.

The competition itself focused on two main areas:

  • (i) Stock Handling, where participants are required to skilfully show an animal in a show class type situation.
  • (ii) Stock Judging, where participants must use all their knowledge to judge 4 animals in similar placing to the master judge, Trevor Masterson – participants must also give their reasons for their judging placings.

Taking top honours in the individual competition was our own Tom Hickey with a total of 137 points, followed by William McElroy, Northern Ireland in second and Richard Priestley, UK in third. Tom gave a very confident performance in all aspects of the competition, and with father John and uncles Michaels and Tom involved is was clear to see where he got his tutoring from!

In the team competition the Northern Ireland team who won the day with 377 points followed by team UK on 361 points with our team very close on 358 points.

This competition in only its second year is proving to be a huge success and a word of thanks must go to the Northern Ireland Limousin club for organising the event and also a special word of thanks to our own YMA coordinator – James Wycherley.

The Irish YMA team who competed in the Anglo-Irish YMA competition l to r: James Wycherley, (YMA coordinator), Sharon Rothwell, Mark Barrett, Tom Hickey, Brian McElroy (Chariman NI Limousin Club) & Michael O’Grady.
