The Irish Limousin Society Young Members national final competition took place in Roscrea Mart on Saturday 2nd July. The Young Members Association is for ages 12 to 25 and helps young breeders to learn about judging and showing of Limousin cattle. The event kicked off with master judge Gareth McGuinness of the Bradden Bridge Limousin herd providing an informative talk on how to describe and judge animals.

For the first stage of the competition the young members had to judge two sets of four cattle (four bulls and four heifers) and place them in order of merit from 1st to 4th. Members of the audience were also encouraged to participate in the open stock judging competition with prizes for the top three in the different age categories. The next stage of the competition was the reasons section, the judging panel of Gareth McGuinness, Kevin Bohan and Sarah McElligott listened to the competitors who explained their reasons for placing the bulls in order of 1st to 4th. The final part of the competition was the showing section where each competitor had to show/lead a calf chosen at random in the show ring. Finally Gareth provided his placings for the four bulls and explained he explained the reasons why the judging panel had placed these animals one ahead of the other.

Elanor Reilly of the North East club was crowned Senior Champion and received the Senior cup, Shanon Kinahan of the South West claimed second place with Orla Curtin also from the South West claiming third.

Conor Craig was victorious in the Junior section and went home with the coveted Junior cup, he was followed in second place by Rachel Moloney from Clare, with Aidan Kinihan from the South West club claiming third spot.

The four competitors selected to represent Ireland at the Anglo-Irish Young Members event which will take place on Saturday 27th August as part of the week long International Limousin Congress were Rachel Maloney (Clare), Aidan Kinahan (South West), Owen Hester (North West) and Shanon Kinahan (South West).

Congratulations to the South West club who claimed the best team title for the third year in a row. The team comprised of Aidan Kinahan, Shanon Kinahan, Orla Curtin and Maeve Curtin. The Clare team finished in second place with the North West team finishing third.

Many thanks to Roscrea Mart for hosting the event, the judges, the co-coordinators, the breeders who provided cattle and the competitor’s parents. Well done to all young members who participated and best of luck to the Irish team in the Anglo Irish competition in August.
