The Irish Limousin Society Young Members national final and workshop took place in Roscrea Mart on Sunday August 30th. The Young Members Association is for ages 12 to 25 and helps young breeders to learn about judging and showing Limousin cattle. The day started with master judge Clive Jennings of the Brooklands Limousin herd providing a very informative talk on how to describe and judge an animal.

The competition started with the young members judging two sets of four cattle and placing them in order from 1st to 4th. Then the judging panel of Clive Jennings, Marie-Louise Ryan and Ann Marie Gunn listened to the competitors who explained the reasons for their placings. The final part of the competition involved the showing section where each competitor had to show a calf chosen at random in the show ring. This section was judged by Karol Connell who provided very good tips to the handlers at the end of the section.

Finally Clive Jennings provided his placings for the two sets of four cattle and provided reasons why he placed one ahead of the other. Marie-Louise also provided general feedback to competitors on the reasons they had provided for their placings earlier in the day. This was very informative and provided an insight on how to get top marks and where competitors could improve.

The top four competitors on the day were Rachel Maloney (Clare), Shannon Kinahan (South West), April Higgins (North West) and Owen Hester (North West). These four members have been selected to represent Irish Limousin at the Anglo-Irish Young Members event which will take place later this year.
The South West club retained the best team title. The team comprised of Shannon Kinahan, Orla Curtin, Aidan Kinahan and Maeve Curtin. For the second year in a row the North West team was placed second and the Clare team finished third.

Many thanks to Roscrea Mart for hosting the event, the judges, the co-coordinators, the breeders who provided cattle and the competitor’s parents. Well done to all young members who participated and best of luck to the Irish team in the Anglo Irish competition.
