Irish Limousin Society YMA finals 2014

The Limousin Society Young Members national finals and workshop was held in Mountrath Mart on Sunday July 6th. The Young Members Association is for 12 to 25 year olds and helps young breeders to learn about judging and showing Limousin cattle. A large crowd of spectators and supporters watched over 30 competitors battle it out in the various competitions. The day started with Trevor Masterson of the Galbally limousin herd give a very informative talk on how to describe and judge an animal and how to compare and contrast animals.

The competition started with the young members judging two sets of four cattle and placing them in order from 1st to 4th. Then the master judge Tom Hickey ably assisted by Sharon Rothwell and Kevin Bohan the ILCS president listened to the competitors who explained the reasons for their placings. The third part of the competition was the showing section where each competitor had to show a calf chosen at random in the show ring. This section was judged by Trevor Masterson and Karl Connell who gave very good tips to the handlers at the end of the section. The top marks in showing went to Christopher O’Connor from Elphin, Co. Roscommon and he showed an animal while Karl gave a commentary to help the young members improve their technique.

After the competition was over the top three point scorers in the reasons section Orla Curtin, Shanon Kinahan and Melvin Masterson repeated their presentation before all the competitors. This was very informative and gave all the members a chance to see how to get top marks and where they could improve.

The top four competitors when all the points were totted up will represent the ILCS in an international competition at Antrim Show on July 26th where they will compete against teams from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The team selected was Shanon Kinahan, Melvin Masterson, Orla Curtin, and Eamon O’Donovan.
