The Irish Limousin Cattle Society held their second show and sale for 2016 at Tullamore mart on Saturday the 19th March.

Tullamore Sale saw a strong clearance rate of 85% with a top price of €4,600 and an average price of €3,168 for bulls. This was a marked improvement on the 2015 sale at this venue where the clearance rate was 67% and the average price was €2,525. Only one heifer was catalogued, she sold for €1,850.

Breed secretary Paul Sykes stated, “I am very pleased with the clearance rate here in Tullamore, as this is only our third sale here at this venue. A clearance rate of 85% indicates the growing demand for Limousin bulls. Our breeders focus is on producing the required bulls to meet the demands for both todays and future markets.

Many of the buyers present at the sale had different reason for choosing Limousin and are very happy to stay with the breed given its ability to produce bulls that can combine our most notable abilities - easy calving, quality calves/weanlings, carcass weight, maternal traits to breed replacements, terminal traits - there are Limousin bulls to suit all requirements. All bulls at this year’s society sales are sold under the Fertility Insurance Scheme.

Purchasers at today’s sale were from all over Ireland. I would like to thank the management and staff here in Tullamore, I would also like to thank Pat Feehily, George Candler and John Connell. Finally, I wish the purchasers of cattle here today the very best of luck with their acquisitions.”

Auctioneer was Mr. George Candler. Officiating as judge for this sale was Mr. Pat Feehily from Athlone. Pat is a pedigree Limousin breeder, his herd is the Ash Grove herd, which consists of 20 pedigree Limousin cows. Commenting after the sale Pat noted: “I was presented with excellent quality bulls in all classes. It is very evident that Limousin breeders are continuing to meet the requirements of today’s market, judging by the demand and the excellent clearance rate.”
