The South West Limousin Club held a YMA Event on Friday evening the 19th of July, 2013. This event was to facilitate demonstrations for our younger members on different principles including an insight into indexes, clipping, showing and judging. During the course of the evening our YMA team for the forthcoming National YMA (in Mouthrath on Saturday the 3rd of August) was selected.
To kick off the evening our club secretary John O’Connor welcomed everyone to Fedamore. John explained the running order for the evening and then called upon Rose Goulding to demonstrate the different points of an animal to look out for when showing.
Marie-Louise Ryan then compared two young bulls – giving an excellent insight into the differing points between both. She repeated this task with two young heifers, having firstly given the YMA a chance to appraise the heifers for themselves.
Chris Daly of ICBF explained indexes.
The Judges gave 10 minutes to the YMA to apprise two lots of four cattle, once this task was complete each competitor went before the three panel judging committee to explain their reasons for their placings. The judges for this section were Paul Sykes, Rose Goulding and Sean Ryan.
Next on the agenda was a showing section, Paul Hannon of the IHFA judged the YMA in this section of the competition. After the formalities of the showing Paul took time to explain different aspects of showing.
While the Young Members were being put through their paces Darragh O’Meara gave a clipping demo.
The foremost objective of this event was to give young members an opportunity to learn and put into practice the advice they had received from the judges. Secondary to this was the team selection, the team to represent the South West club on the 3rd of August is Michael Bateman, Eamon O’Donovan, Maeve Curtin and Órla Curtin.
The South West Club is delighted that Cappamore Show is this year the host site for Anglo Irish YMA. The Anglo Irish YMA is an annual event which has developed into a very high profile and prestigious international event involving teams from Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Cappamore Show is very highly regarded among exhibitors and regular Show supporters throughout the Munster region as well as nationally. The Show was founded in 1954 and has run continually since. This year the show is on Saturday 17th August at the Showgrounds in Portnard, Cappamore.
A special word of thanks to Doreen and Tim Corridan for making their facilities and stock available, Chris Daly from ICBF, Judges Rose Goulding, Paul Sykes, Sean Ryan and Paul Hannon, Marie Louise Ryan and Darragh O’Meara for their training sessions, everyone who helped with the planning and running of the event and especially the Young Members who attended. We would like to wish the South West team every good fortune on the 3rd of August - most importantly enjoy the occasion.
