The South West Limousin Club held their calf championship for 2014 at Kilmallock mart on Thursday evening the 18th of September. Teagasc hosted a very informative BTAP Beef Breeding event at the same venue, therefore a very large crowd were in attendance.

Entries for the championship were slightly lower than previous years but the overall quality on display was of a very high standard. Tasked with the judging responsibilities was Mr. Seamus Lynch of Kilpeacon, Co. Limerick. Seamus is very highly regarded in cattle circles and has judged many events in the past. He was involved in bringing some of the first Limousin AI sires to Ireland and has since been an advocate of the breed. He now farms commercial Limousin Sucklers, which he crosses with Limousin AI sires. Seamus gave a very interesting insight into his reasons for placing the classes. In the Limousin breed he likes animals that are very true to type. There are three distinct types ‚?“ a. the Ideal, b. the extreme and c. the robust. Limousin have the ability to produce quality cattle for each type.
