Report 2008:

The South East Club had a very successful and eventful year in 2008. We held our AGM in February where Norman Stanley was elected Chairman, the following were re-elected Emer Byrne as Secretary and Noel Brennan as Treasurer Over the course of the year we held 3 meetings. Our guest speaker at our first meeting was Dr. Doreen Corridan who gave a very informative and interesting presentation from the new Index Figures to the Gene Ireland programme. Our speaker at our second meeting was Dr. Noel Gowan who discussed a number of topics from the Beef Expo to Linear Scoring. Paul Sykes spoke at our third meeting and he also discussed Linear Scoring and Tully.

In August our club held the National YMA workshop day on Ardlea Herd. We had 30 young Limousin breeders taking part from all around Ireland. On the day there were grooming demonstrations and stockjudging also took place. A team of 4 were picked to represent Ireland in the Anglo-Irish Limousin YMA competition held in Northern Ireland including Tom Hickey, Sharon Rothwell, Mark Barrett and Michael O’Brady We would like to congratulate all that took part and especially to Tom Hickey who won the individual award. We would also like to thank Dan Tynan and Kevin Bohan for hosting the YMA day, which was a great success.

Also in August we held our club field evening on the commercial Limousin farm of Richard Tyrell. We viewed the herd whilst Richard gave a very informative talk on his stock. The evening was enjoyed by all present. The club would like to thank Richard for his time in preparation for the event and for his hospitality on the day.

Our club calf finals were organised for Tullow Show in Carlow in August, but unfortunately due to bad weather this show was cancelled.

Again the South East club had a successful year on the commercial side, holding two pre-inspected commercial sales in Roscrea one in the Spring and one in Autumn. At each sale there was a great demand for good quality cattle.

The National Ploughing Championships were held in Kilkenny this year, but with a difference, as the commercial side of the Limousin were on show and of course some pedigrees as well. Our club is looking forward to our National Limousin Show been held at the Ploughing Championships in Stradbally, Co. Laois next year.
