A frequent question is “What bulls are doing the business?”. As always there are a number of answers and the bull must suit the cow.

Upon a visit to the show ring or farms you will see excellent offspring from various sires. Trait data and indexes abound predicting how a bull may deliver, while others will say that the sales ring is the real measure.

A review of Spring 2013 Society Sales showed that 110 bulls achieved a price of € 3,000 or better, so what type of bulls were these.

In all 41 different sires were represented by the 110 top priced bulls. It was no surprise to find Sympa to be the most popular sire for the top priced bulls, other prominent sires were Ampertaine Commander, Fieldson Alfy, and Wilodge Cerberus. Interestingly some older sires were still prominent including Nenuphar, Mas Du Clo, Neuf, and Ronick Hawk.

There was no clear pattern in analyzing sire dam line mating with an array of different combinations evident.

Looking at the dominant sire in the dam lines, a strong French influence was apparent. Mas Du Clo and Ferry dam lines appear to be breeding well, and it was no surprise to see the likes of Dauphin, Ideal 23 and Lino prominent.

And finally what about stars and indexes, high index bulls comprised the main share of the top priced bulls but there was also a significant number of bulls with two stars or less who achieved top prices.

In all 62 of the 110 bulls had a minimum of 4 stars for both maternal and terminal indexes while 7 bulls had less than 2 stars for both.

60 of the 110 bulls were 4.5 or 5 star for maternal.

63 of the bulls were 4.5 or 5 star for terminal.

17 of the bulls were 2 star or less for maternal.

15 of the bulls were 2 star or less for terminal.
