Breeding heifers met a fierce trade with an almost 100% clearance at the recent pre selected Limousin commercial heifer sale in Roscrea mart. The fact that all entries had been on farm inspected and screened for the BVD virus appeared to be an added bonus to the sale.
On the day demand exceeded supply with some buyers anxious to purchase a number of replacements, indeed one farmer who purchased 20 heifers at the similar sale in 2009 returned to buy in excess of 30 animals all destined for his Kerry suckler herd.
One reassuring fact was the number of high profile suckler farmers from both North and South of the border that attended the sale and were willing to pay a high premium for quality animals.
More and more customers are recognising the traits that have made Limousin the number 1 Irish suckler dam, the combination of calving ability, milkiness, tidy udders, longevity, high cull value and the ability to cross well with all breeds.
