I am pleased to report that the North West Club can again report a very successful year.We held our AGM in December where Tom Finnerty was elected Chairman, Michael Fox Secretary and Tom Walsh was returned as Treasurer.
During the year we held 4 Club meetings which were all well attended. We had Dr Ross Evans of ICBF as guest speaker at our 1st meeting. His presentation was informative and gave an insight into the reasoning behind their thinking. He did say things would accelerate as more data became available. We also had Richard Collins and Paul Sykes at later meetings.
The year was a busy one on the show circuit with numbers very positive culminating at Elphin in September with the hosting of the National YMA Workshop in conjunction with the North West Calf Championships. We had 25 young Limousin enthusiasts from all around the country. It was highly successful. It included Stock Training, Showing and grooming after which Tom Hickey and Sean Moroney, being the two highest scores on the day go forward to the Irish Team to represent ILCS at the Anglo Irish final in Carlisle next December. A group of young handlers from NI were down for the day and were suitably received. The club wishes to thank Judges Ms Teleri Thomas and Richard O’Beirne for doing a splendid job.
The new championships were also very successful; again standards were high and congratulations to all that took part. It is fair to say that the high number of quality Limousin cattle on show attracted much interest from the large crowd.
The club had a very enjoyable trip to the UK including a visit to Smiths of Bloxham where we saw a superb herd of Limousin cattle including their famous sire Vantastic. We were received in the most hospitable fashion and one could not be but impressed. We had a marvellous day at the Royal Show which was the last.
The Club held an open day at Gerry Walsh’s to see the Derrygullinane herd. All present were treated to an exhibition of truly excellent Limousines. The Club would like to thank Gerry for the friendliness and hospitality which left a lasting impression. We held our annual Cross Breed heifer sale in Castlerea where trade was brisk with good prices for quality animals.
Many thanks to the organisers, the people who inspected the cattle and to the management of Castlerea Mart. Well done to all who participated in the Herds competition and congratulations to the winners.
Finally the club wishes to thank the office staff in Limousin and a special word of thanks to Paul Sykes and the management of the Limousin Society.
