The demand at the second Christmas Cracker was only for the top quality females’ according to Dr. Ger Ryan, Breed Secretary. The Christmas Cracker brought the 2006 sales season to an end with the days trading resulting in an average price of €2,796 (up €240 on the corresponding sale last year) with a disappointing clearance rate of 35%.

Topping the days trading at €6,000 was Moloskey A417 from Brendan Clancy, Mullagh, Co. Clare. This very classy heifer generated lots of interest during the day where she was the Female Champion & first prize-winner in the pre sale show. An All-Ireland calf final winner earlier in 2006 coupled with ten red rosettes at summer agricultural shows meant a future show heifer was on offer. A late October 2005 daughter of Ronick Hawk and out an Ideal 23 sired dam Lissenair Renar. The nice pedigree & good BLUP Figures convinced Denis O’ Neill, Sneem, Co. Kerry to purchase Moloskey A417 for his growing pedigree herd.

The next highest price of €4,900 went to Ballynerrin Veenie from Jim O’Neill, Ballynerrin, Co. Wicklow. This first prize-winner in the pre sale show is a daughter of Nestor who is herd stock sire with the Ballynerrin & Ardnacrusha herds and out of French imported dam Nicotine. This powerful January 2004 heifer sold incalf to Pacha 08, National Male Champion in 2005 & 2006. This overall package now heads to fellow Wicklow breeder Noel Kenny from Roundwood.

She was Reserve Female Champion & first prize-winner on the day who just a few days earlier was crowned winner of the 2006 Junior Female of the Year which is a competition for junior heifers gaining most points at summer agricultural shows. She now heads to the Bridgeview Herd of George M cCague, Newry, Co. Down who earlier in 2006 purchased one of the Premier Show & sale male champions.
