The second spring sale for the Irish Limousin Cattle Society took place in Mountrath Mart on Saturday 4th April. This sale was added as an extra date for 2009 and scheduled on a Saturday with a conscious view to accommodating the ever increasing number of part time farmers now purchasing Limousin bulls.

The sale saw a small catalogue of 38 bulls selling at an average of €1,923. Topping the days trade were two Limerick bred bulls, Roundhill Commerillo 1047 and Drombanny Champion.

“Roundhill Commerillo 1047”, a second prizewinner on the day, was a September 2007 ET calf by Mas Du Clo out of French cow Operette and was exhibited by Timothy Corridan, Fedamore, Co. Limerick. He was purchased by William Graham, Ballickmoyler, Carlow for €2,400.

“Drombanny Champion” was a December 2007 born bull and placed 3rd in his class. Bred by Patrick Sheahan, Drombanna, Co, Limerick, he was by Lino and out of a home bred cow Drombanny Rosie. This bull was purchased for €2,400 by Mr. PJ Foy, Edenderry, Co. Offaly

Both Champion and Reserve Champion failed to meet their reserve on the day. The Champion on the day judged by Mr. Jimmy Smith, Co. Wexford went to “Mountscott Conor” a November 2007 by Cloughhead Lord out of homebred Gamin cow. He was exhibited by Michael Sexton, Mullagh, Ennis, Co. Clare.

Reserve Champion was “Ashleigh Dan” for Tony & Bridget Grady, Julianstown, Co. Meath. This February 2008 bull was an ET son of Millbrook Tanko out a homebred Espoir cow.

Other notable prices in the bull sale included:

  • €2,200 for “Carrowreagh Clown” by Ronick Hawk from Patrick J Bruen, Ephin, Co. Roscommon.
  • €2,000 for “Pelletstown Chairman” by Grahams Samson from Roger Mc Carrick, Drumree, Co. Meath
  • €2,000 for “Carrowreagh Clive” by Mas Du Clo” from Patrick J Bruen, Ephin, Co. Roscommon.
  • €2,000 for “Derry Limousins Cody” by Manoir from Michael Murray, Lahinch, Co. Clare.
  • €2,000 for “Corlea Dep” by Clegghill Upton from Thomas Connor, Kenagh, Co. Longford.

A small catalogue of 12 heifers yielded an average of €1,950. The top price and Champion female was “Mount Scott Becky” bred by Michael Sexton, Mullagh, Ennis, Co. Clare. She was sold for €2,700 to Conor Dooley, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.  This December 2006 heifer was incalf to Gamin and by Pacha 19.

Second to the Champion and second highest price heifer was “Baltray Charis” by Pelletstown Ulex was exhibited by Patrick & Hilda Mc Donnell, Gormanstown, Co. Meath. This January 2007 heifer was also purchased for €2,000 by Conor Dooley, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.
