After the busy day at Cappamore show it was on to Limerick Racecourse in Greenmount Park, Patrickswell for Limerick Show. The show which runs for two days - confined the cattle showing to Sunday. There was a large turnout of cattle from near and far for the many classes with a number of All Ireland championships, which had big entries and very good prize money on offer.
From early morning the sun shone on Greenmount – taking its toll on the exhibitors and the cattle! Judge Teleri Thomas had a difficult task given the large numbers of very high quality cattle in each class. Steward on the day was John O’Shea, who ensured everything ran smoothly and efficiently.
Tapped forward as overall Limousin Champion was Roundhill Egiroflee a Mas du Clo daughter bred by Tim and Doreen Corridan. Reserve female champion was Dan Tynan’s cow Anabel. Male champion was John McInerney’s Drummin Eagle with the Reserve champion title going to Casimir who had travelled all the way from Mountrath and proved to be a big hit with the crowd – Casimir is a ‘massively’ impressive three year old bull from the Ardlea Herd of Dan Tynan.
Other South West club breeders took home some of the prizes on offer with a 2nd place rosette going to Noel Fennessy of the Wood Road herd for his September 2009 born calf Wood Road Eric. Sean O’Sullivan of the Castleview herd picked up 3rd in the same class for his Fieldson Alfy calf Castleview Eclipse.
The young handlers was won by Cathal O’Meara, with Orla Curtin in second, closely followed by Katie Corridan, Michael Bateman and Richard Bateman. A special word of thanks to Doreen Corridan - who very kindly lent calves to a number of the young handlers.
Separate from the Limousin classes a very large number competed for the title of Young Beef Stockperson – a delighted Eoghan McInerney won the coveted prize. Eoghan (son of society President John) exhibited his homebred bull Drummin Freddie. The competition was open to pedigree and commercial beef cattle of all breeds.
