A perennial feature of the spring calendar, Kilkenny Agricultural Society held their annual premier bull show and sale on the third Wednesday of March, 18th, in Cillin Hill.

This year’s running of the event was judged by Padraig Murphy. 24 bulls were offered for sale, and judging was held over 2 classes. With 14 bulls sold, the sale clearance was 58%, with an average price of €2,650, which was an improvement on the statistics for this sale last year which were 55% and €2,220.

Top price of the day went for pre-sale show champion Boroside Ignitor, exhibited by Mr George Masterson, Rathnure, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. Ignitor is a November 2013 born son of Wilodge Cerberus, out of Boroside Elle, herself by Ronick Hawk. A stylish young bull, he was bought by Mr John Lanigan, Coppenagh, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny for €3,200.

Two bulls sold for €3,100. The first of these was the Reserve Champion of the show, Thomastown Irwin, sold by Mr John Downey, The Rower, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. Irwin is by Bavardage, an On-Dit son, and is out of an Ionesco dam, who also has Genial in her back pedigree. He was bought by Mr Larry Forristal, Ballinacrea, Slieverue, Co. Kilkenny.

Mr Oliver Byrne, Ballyquirke, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny sold the other bull to go for €3,100, Ballyquirke Imperial ET. Imperial was second to the reserve champion in the pre-sale show. The shapey son of Emerson was bought by Mr Liam Brennan, Kellymount, Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny.

Two bulls sold for €2,750. The first of these was Galbally Iacchus, a September born son of Ampertaine Commander, out of a Wilodge Vantastic cow, offered for sale by Mr Trevor Masterson, Ballyhogue, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. This bull was bought by Mr Harry Deacon, Coolaught, Clonroche, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. The second bull at this price was Kilbricken Ivor ET. Ivor was exhibited by Mr Denis Dowling, Mountrath, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, and was bought by Mr Thomas Burtchaell, Clohastia, Borris, Co. Carlow.

Mr Thomas Swaine, Farmleigh, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, sold an On-Dit son, Farmleigh Intel Inside to Mr Simon Mosse, Dunedin, Bennetsbridge, Co. Kilkenny for €2,700. Also sold for this price was Ballygarvan Stud Isidore ET, a son of Sympa, sold by Mr Dan O™Mahoney, Ballygarvan Co. Cork, to Mr Paddy Kavanagh, Coolintacourt, Gorey, Co. Wexford.

Ballyquirke Incredible ET was sold for €2,600 by Mr Oliver Byrne, Ballyquirke, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny to Mr Jim Harrison, Ballacolla, Co. Laois. Incredible is a September born son of Emerson.

Three bulls were sold for €2,500. The first of these was a Queenshead Altea son, Clodyview Ibar, sold by Mr Thomas Murphy, Killanure, Bunclody, Co. Wexford to Mr John Nugent, Rathgormack, Carrick-on-Suir. Mr Dan O’Mahoney, Ballygarvan Co. Cork, sold Ballygarvan Stud Ivanhoe ET, an Ampertaine Commander son, to Mr David Cantlon, Carrigpark, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, and finally Mr Thomas Swaine, Farmleigh, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford sold Farmleigh Igor, a son of Bavardage, to Mr Eamon Nolan, Demesne, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny, at this price.
