A large crowd attended a superb open day on farm of John & Gerry Walsh Derrygullinane, Knockmore, Ballina, Co. Mayo, on display were Pedigree Limousin stock from Derrygullinane Herd featuring a number of specific cow families and their extended progeny which included an elite group of 2008 / 2009 calves within this group were calves from an embryo programme which produced some excellent calves, of which a number have been successful at many local Agricultural Shows. Herd has won the North West Limousin Club Small Herds Competition in 2007 & 2008.

Features on the day included Stock Judging for Bulls & Heifers and Junior Stock Judging, Guess the Weight of Bull & Heifer with prizes kindly sponsored by Smyth’s, Stewarts, Sligo AI, Paddy Fitzgerald, Powerful Genetics and Bova AI. In addition there was a Linear Scoring Demo by Donie Mc Keon local ICBF scorer who was also master judge on the day.

Gerry Welsh Open Day 16th Aug 2010

Gerry gave an informative talk on his stock breeding policies including breeding for replacements and selection of sires for individual cows and included some practical advice on training animals for showing and sales.

Paul Sykes Breed Development Officer with ILCS led a discussion on the Pedigree stock on display highlighting their impressive BLUP indexes for Muscle, Skeletal and Docility – data was available for each animal together with Herd Plus report and Eurostar report for entire herd with many animals showing five stars for all of these traits.

Irish Limousin Cattle Society was one of the first breed societies to implement linear scoring of all cattle entering the Society’s Pedigree Herd Book thus providing an excellent source of data for the breed to build on and develop for the future with the Limousin breed excelling in the Eurostar Genetic Evaluation system for beef animals.

Event was informative for all in attendance with conclusions that the Limousin breed can satisfy both the Maternal and Terminal requirements on many farms, the availability of bulls with high reliability for docility in breeding replacements is crucial for future development of the Limousin breed in both the Pedigree and Commercial Herds, the evening concluded with refreshments for all participants.
