The Cork Limousin Club had another busy year in 2009.We had an average attendance of over 20 at our club
meetings. Guest speakers at our meetings included Rose Goulding, Andrew Cromie and Paul Sykes.
At the AGM in February, the following officers were elected for the year: Frank Buckley as Chairman, Mary Curtin, Vice chairman, Donal O’Brien, Secretary and Michael Pat Murphy as PRO.
This year the Club organised its first commercial Limousin heifer sale at Corrin Mart, Fermoy in April. A sub-committee was formed to plan and organise the sale. All heifers were inspected prior to the sale. Unfortunately the sale wasn’t as successful as hoped; the sale was at the start of a downward trend in cattle prices. We are planning to hold another sale next year hopefully building on the experience of this year. Thanks to Frank Buckley, Michael Pat Murphy, John O’Grady and Dan O’Mahony for their work in getting this project going.
The annual Cork Calf Championships, sponsored by Dovea Genetics, was held once again at Bantry show on the first Sunday in September. Entry numbers were well up on previous years. The overall winner was shown by Gearoid Kingston.
The Club also held YMA events at Barryroe and Bantry Shows, which attracted strong entries of a very good standard. We’d like to thank James Wycherley for his work with the YMA locally and nationally.
The winners of the Herd Competition for the Cork Club, judged by David Kelly, were:
- Best medium herd: James Wycherley
- Best small herd: Donal O’Brien
- Best group of calves: Dan O’Mahony
- Best 2008 born Bull: Donal O’Brien
- Best 2008 born Heifer: James Wycherley.
On behalf of the club I want to thank the Society staff: Paul, Colette, Kathryn and Marie for all their help this year. Finally, we wish all our members every success for 2010 and look forward to another successful year for our club.
