Report 2008:

The Cork Limousin Club had another busy year in 2008. We had an average attendance of over 20 at our club meetings. At the AGM in February, the following officers were elected for the year:  Frank Buckley as Chairman, Mary Curtin, Vice-chairman and Donal O’Brien, Secretary.

In March the Club ran a class of Limousins in conjunction with the Bandon multi-breed bull show and sale. However prices were affected by a major swing to the use of Dairy bulls.

The Club made a presentation to Cork Club member and outgoing Society Secretary Ger Ryan, at a club dinner at Rochestown Park Hotel in May. Ger made a major contribution to the Limousin cause in Ireland and we wish him well in his new post as manager of Dovea AI Station.

In September, we organised a club field evening hosted by Clive and Rhoda Jennings in Enniskeane. Luckily, given the terrible weather this summer and autumn, the sun shone on a great herd of both pedigree and commercial Limousin cattle. We are very grateful to Clive and Rhoda and for their openness and hospitality. On the day were introduced to our new breed development officer, Paul Sykes. We wish Paul every success in his future role within the Society.

Stock judging winner at the field evening of Clive and Rhoda Jennings. L to R: Donal O’Brien club secretary, John Kingston from Ballineen, Michael Pat Murphy from Ballydehob, Michael Regan Skibbareen and Mary Curtin Club vice chariperson.

The annual Cork Calf Championships returned to Bantry show on the first Sunday in September. The overall winner was shown by Dan O’Mahony Ballygarvan Stud a November 07 born daughter of Millbrook Tanko, The Club also held successful YMA events at both Barryroe and Bantry Shows. YMA is particularly strong in our club, thanks to the sterling efforts of National YMA co-ordinator James Wycherley.

Entries from the Cork Club in the Herd Competition, judged by Peter Henshal, were up this year. The winners were:

Best large herd: Michael Lyons,
Best Medium herd: James Wycherley
Best small herd: Clive Jennings,
Best group of calves: James Wycherley,
Best 2006 born Bull: James Wycherley,
Best 2006 born Heifer: James Wycherley.

On behalf of the club I want to thank the Society staff: Noel, Paul, Colette, Kathryn and Marie for all their help this year. Finally, we wish all our members every success for 2009 and look forward to another successful year for our club.
