The Clare Club is one of three single county Limousin clubs in Ireland, with a membership of approximately 250 breeders. Each year we hold three to four meetings per year and discuss various topics related to pedigree breeding and the beef industry in general. We held our A.G.M. last March, at which the sitting officers were elected. While this has been the case for four years in a row I now feel that it is time for others to take the positions in 2009. At our meeting we Dr. Doreen Corridan and Dr. Noel Gowen made presentations on breeding issues, the Euro-star index system, and BLUP figures.
During the summer many of our breeders took to the show ring both locally and nationally. Our Club Calf Finals were held in Corofin and the winners were Brendan Clancy for his September Bull and September Heifer, Declan Griffin January Bull and Shane Quilligan won the prize for the best January Heifer.
In August we held a meeting concerning the newly imposed 1.7kg A.D.G. ruling. There was a lively discussion on the merits or not of this ruling and our the details of our discussion were forwarded to the society for their information.
In August Michael Priestley came over from England and judged the Herds competition. Eight herds in total from the club took part in the competition. The presentation of plaques were made by the new Breed Development Officer Paul Sykes at our November Meeting. We discussed the merits of the club competition and many spoke in favour of it and hoped that it would continue in the future. The winners of this years competition were:
Large Herd: Michael Sexton
Medium Herd: Declan Griffin
Small Herd: John McInerney
Best Heifer born in 2007 went to Shane Quilligan for his Mas Du Clo Heifer.
Best Bull born in 2007 went to Brendan Clancy for his Ronick Hawk Bull.
Best Group of Calves went to John McInerney.
Also at the November meeting Paul Sykes, gave us an outline of his vision for the Limousin Breed in Ireland into the future.
Finally, we would like to congratulate everyone who had an input into the hugely successful Beef Expo 08 it was a great showpiece for Irish Pedigree Breeders. A special mention goes to fellow club member John McInerney on breeding and showing the Overall Champion Limousin, at the National Show, Beef Expo 08.
