John O’Grady Memorial Trophy

The prize giving and carcase viewing for the John O’Grady Memorial Cow Carcase Competitions were held in Ashbourne Meats Roscrea on Tuesday January 22nd.

The event was well attended and very informative with an excellent display of Limousin carcases.

Enteries for the competition were an all time high at around 300 cattle with strong representations from pedigree breeders and commercial users of Limousin. Talking to commercial finishers there is no doubt that Limousin is the breed of choice when it comes to carcase, their feed efficiency combined with ability to finish, carcase quality and kill out make them ideal.

Looking through the kill sheets for the week there was very few cows returning less than €1,700 with some exceptional kill outs and values noted. These included €2,456 for a 7 year old Nenuphar cow with kill out 58%, €2,251 for a 10 year old Malibu cow, €2,223 for and 8 year old cow by a Rocky son, and €2,051 for a Mas Du Clo cow.

The John O’Grady Memorial Trophy went to specialised beef finisher Anthony Melvin who has some very good cows entered. Anthony is a keen buyer of Limousin store cows and other cattle. According to Anthony Limousin are great for feed efficiency and ability to finish plus they will also leave you a quality carcase with high kill out. His breed of choice is Limousin not just because he likes them but most importantly for profit.

In deciding on the top carcases French meat buyer Henri Hoffman took into consideration the overall balance and meat yield from the carcase, he wanted carcases with both a good round and a good loin.

Mary O’Grady accompanied by daughter Shiela and son Michael were on hand to present the trophy in honour of John.
