The 56th Annual Agricultural show in Cappamore was held on Wednesday 18th August 2010. The show is very popular by exhibitors of all breeds, with cattle travelling from near and far to compete in its many prestigious classes. This year the show (along with its usual classes) had the honour of hosting the All Ireland Limousin Heifer and Bull Derby. The Derby which has been held annually since 2007 is a cross border initiative between The Northern Ireland Limousin Club and The Irish Limousin Cattle Society. It was held last year at Clogher Valley show having previously been hosted by Virginia and Castlewellan Shows.
The Derby is pre-qualified with just twelve cattle in each class. The bulls must have been born on or after 1st of January 2009 with the heifers been born on or after 1st June 2008.
Ardlea Electra, born in January 2009 was tapped forward as the winning heifer. Electra is owned and breed by Dan Tynan. She is a Fieldson Alfy daughter out of Vorace (a Renard cow).
The winning bull was Carrickaldreen Enrico, owned by Peter Murphy. Enrico is an Oxygene son out of Barnattin Ursla.
Secretary of Cappamore Show Paddy Ryan introduced the Secretary of The Northern Ireland Limousin Club, Brian McElory and secretary of The Irish Limousin Cattle Society – Paul Sykes to the very large crowd. Both were complementary in their praise for the show and were very grateful for all the help and co-operation shown to them by all involved in the competition. Paddy and Sean Ryan of the Sliabh Feilm Limousin herd were delighted with the numbers of cattle on show (numbers while always high - were up on previous years). Sean and Paddy put in a tremendous amount of work every year to ensure everything is in order for exhibitors and their stock and for the attendees at the show. We don’t always appreciate the amount of effort that goes into the running of a show like Cappamore, it takes a lot of dedication from a large team both before and after the event and we all in the South West Limousin club would like to express our gratitude to Sean and Paddy and all involved in the running of the show.
The show itself kicked off with a very keenly contested young Stock Person competition. This was an interbreed class, which was judged by Peter O’Connell. Peter put the competitors through their paces and out of a very large entry of over 30 youngsters - Daniel Moloney of Roo West, Ardnacrusha was tapped forward as the well deserved winner. Daniel received the Macra Na Feirme Perpetual Cup.
Overall Limousin champion for the day was “Millbrook Celine” owned by William Smith, Oldcastle, Co. Meath. A Greensons Gigalo heifer out of the renowned show cow, Millbrook Ulla, Celine had previously taken the overall Limousin title at the Tullamore National Livestock Show earlier in the month.
Local breeder Noel Cunneen of Killonan fought off stiff competition to win the Continental cow, pedigree or non-pedigree, in calf or with calf class. Noel and his son Jack took the red rosette with their cow Bailey’s Aubergine and her bull calf. The calf, Killonan Falcon is by Queenshead Altea and was born in April. Noel Fennessy of the Wood Road herd had first and third in the Pedigree Limousin Heifer born between 1st September 2008 to 31st August, 2009 class. Wood Road Elisa by Sympa picked up the red rosette, while Wood Road Debbie got the yellow rosette (she is also by Sympa). Noel was also in the line up for the Derby with a September born bull calf Wood Road Eric.
The Roundhill herd of Tim, Doreen and Katie Corridan picked up rosettes in two of the classes. Their heifers Roundhill Eleny 1188, and Roundhill Eleny 1186 were 2nd and 4th respectively in the Female born on or after the 1st of September 2009. Both heifers are by Tistou and out of a home bred cow Roundhill Timotei. The Corridan family also had two entries in the final shake up of the Derby - Roundhill Europe a Domino son in the Bull class and Roundhill Egiroflee 1164 in the heifer class.
Judge for the Limousin classes was Mr. Ron Cruickshank from the Kype Herd in Scotland.
