Irish bloodlines to the fore at ILC Show

Around 5000 people attended the ILC show held at Beef Expo 2004, on the Royal Highland Showground. Crowds were enthralled from the moment the show opened, until the last class was judged. All the judging, which saw over 300 cattle judged by Paul Byas, took place in one mammoth session from 8am, through to 4pm. The eventual overall champion was Grahams Samson from the Shire herd of Doug Edgar, Penrith, Cumbria. Its the second time Samson has taken the headlines...after he made a world record price in 2003, at 55,000gns in Carlisle.

For the Irish it was a particularly pleasing show as several animals were bred in Ireland or sired by Irish bulls. First blow for the Irish was in the Intermediate Female section when Spage Tess got the nod as the best heifer born on or between 01/07/02 and 31/12/02. This heifer was owned and bred by Northern Irish breeder, William Campbell. The connection of this heifer to the South of Ireland is that she is sired by Milbrook R2K, a Festin son bred by William Smith of Milbrook Limousin, Oldcastle, Co. Meath. R2K was himself shown at the show and went on to do great things. This four and a half year old bull was judged the Reserve Champion to Grahams Samson in the senior bull section and the same result stood for the Overall Male Championship of the Show. William Campbell purchased R2K at the Roscrea Premier sale in October 2001 for a modest €5,078 and it has turned out to be a very shrewd purchase.

Earlier in the show, another Roscrea graduate - Ardnacrusha Uthman had Irish eyes smiling when he got the nod as the best bull born in 2003. Uthman is a son of Nestor bred by Donal Moloney of Ardnacrusha Limousin in Co. Clare and out of a Genereux cow bred by Roger McCarrick of Pelletstown Limousin. Uthman was purchased at the March Premier Sale in Roscrea for €15,000 by Norman Cruikshank and George Long and he has provided his new owners with considerable success during the summer show circuit in the UK.

The Roscrea Premier Sales are proving to be a source of the very best Irish Limousin has to offer and results from ILC show confirming their position as being among the best in the world.
