Irish Limousin Athenry Sale sees strong clearance rate of 90% with top price of €6100 with average price of €3345.

The Irish Limousin Society saw the strong trade for Limousin that has been very evident this spring continue at the Athenry show and sale on Thursday 19th April. A capacity crowd with an abundance of customers led to a 90% clearance, similar to the 2011 sale, with an average price of €3345 and a price range from €2500 to €6100.

The dominant factor in this sale was the steady trade with 10 bulls selling in excess of €4000 and another 15 animals selling for between €3500 and €4000 which equates to 43% of animals sold.

Many of the buyers present at the sale stated that one of the main reasons for investing in Limousin was the fact that they see the advantage of the breed with relatively easy calving along with being easy managed and without compromising on quality.

Top price on the day of €6100 went to Richard Hegerty, Lahardaune, Ballina, Co. Mayo for Lough Conn Fernando ET. This much admired Ronick Hawk son is by the well known French dam Ritournell and sold with 5 star SBV of €125 and had good star ratings in most traits. Having been placed 1st in his class earlier in the show Fernando met with a flurry of bids before finally being sold to multiple purchaser on the day Dan O’Sullivan, Gleesk, Kells, Co. Kerry. Mr. O’Sullivan bought three bulls to join his predominantly Limousin commercial suckler herd.

Harry Noble, Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford saw his Vison sired entry Kilcoursey Fly 1 who had earlier been awarded Senior Champion by the judge Mrs. Sarah McElligott of the Shannon pedigree herd at Asdee, Kilcomman, Listowel, Co. Kerry, failing to meet his reserve in the sales ring.

The Reserve Male Champion Aloor Felix from Patsy Creighton, Loughglynn, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, also met strong interest in the sales ring and after some sustained bidding was knocked down at €4800 to Co. Clare pedigree breeder Michael Sexton to join his Aheybridge based Mount Scott pedigree herd. Felix who is twin to a male, is by the ever influential sire Wilodge Vantastic and by the home bred dam Aloor Amanda who has back breeding to Ballynerrin Lorna, Felix boasted a 5-star SBV of €131.

Michael Reynolds, Eslin, Carrick On Shannon received €4600 for his 1st prize winning Wilodge Vantastic son Bunnymore Greg. Bred from a Mas Du Clo dam Bunnymore Venus with back breeding to Dauphin, Greg who had a 5-star SBV of €117 and was strong in most traits joins the pedigree and commercial herd of Joseph Lenehan, Shammer, Kilkelly, Co. Mayo.

Millburn Fabriano from Richard & Eithne O’Beirne, Kilconly, Tuam, Co. Galway sold at €4500 to Declan Higgins, Oranmore, Co. Galway. Sired by Milbrook Dartagnan and Milburn Aoife (a daughter of the prolific 0133 Olympe), Fabriano came to the ring with a 5-star SBV of €114 and displayed high ratings in many traits.

County Leitrim based breeder Stanley Richardson, Newtowngore saw his Wilodge Tonka sired Newtown Fillet selling at €4400 to Mary Murray, Fahy, Shannongrove, Banagher, Co. Offaly. By the Espoir sired dam Curraghree Butterfly, Fillet sold with a 5-star SBV of €110.

Brid Cronin saw her long journey up from Powerstown, Co. Cork rewarded when she received €4300 for Powerstown Finbar from Pat Ballesty, Ballymore, Mullingar. By Milbrook Tanko and the Rocky sired Powerstown Carmel, Finbar sold with a 5-star SBV of €112 and also had high ratings in many traits including fertility.

Stanley Richardson was back in again selling his Junior Male Champion Newtown Gino at €4200 to Liam Stephens, Kilkerrin, Co. Galway. Gino who is by the Sympa sired Ampertaine Brigadeer and by a Ronick Hawk sired dam Newtown April, came with a 5-star SBV of €99.

Kevin McInerney, Newmarket On Fergus, Co. Clare saw his Sympa sired Ard-Choill Future changing hands at €4100 to Michael Burke, Horse & Jockey, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Bred by the Jersey sired French dam 0201 Nougatine, Future sold with a 5-star SBV of €114.

Also selling at €4100 was Mount Scott Francey ET from Michael Sexton, Aheybridge, Mullagh, Co. Clare. Sired by Mas Du Clo and by the Epson daughter Tasson Petuna, Francey sold with a 4-star SBV of €86 and heads to Michael Brown, Mostrim, Co. Longford.

John Moore, Kilmeena, Westport, Co. Mayo received €4000 for his Teddy sired Buckfield Gary from Richard Benn, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. Gary who is by the Nectar sired dam Ballyfin Cutie ET sold with a 4-star SBV of €78 and had top ratings in both Daughter Milk and Gestation.

Selling at €3900 was Kilskeagh Felim from Patrick Gill, Kilskeagh, Athenry, Co. Galway. This Fieldson Alfy son by a home bred dam Kilskeagh Breda, herself sired by Lino, came to the ring with a 5-star SBV of €116 and top ratings in Weanling, Beef, Fertility and Gestation. Felim was purchased by John McDonagh, Turloughmore, Co. Galway.

Another bull to change hands at €3900 was Asheburn Francis from Frank Byrne, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare. This Sympa sired son and by an Omer-Mn daughter Castleview Cathy sold with a 5-star SBV of €95 and had high ratings in most traits, Francis heads to Francis Murphy, Kilcogan, Co. Galway.

Three bulls sold at €3800, John Flanagan sold the Grahams Apache son Lochanboy Flint to Wilson Moore, Carndonagh, Co. Donegal. Flint who is by a Mas Du Clo dam Lochanboy Bess had a 4-star SBV of €87 and had a top rating in Gestation.

Patrick Gill also received €3800 for Kilskeagh Filip from Arthur Egan, Meldrum House, Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath. By Fieldson Alfy and the Eleazar sired dam Kilskeagh Treacy, Filip sold with a 4-star SBV of €86.

The third bull at €3800 was Coolcholly Grome from first time exhibitor Martin Sean Donagher, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. This 1st prize winning son of Ulm and by a Parisien sired dam Coolcholly C-091 had a 2-star SBV of €54.

Selling at €3750 was Mount Scott Gerry from the herd of Michael Sexton. By Grahams Apache and a Dauphin sired dam Larchill Pamela. Gerry, who has a 5-star SBV of €95 with top ratings in Daughter milk, Calving difficulty and Docility, he was purchased by Aidan Corcoran, Birr, Co. Offaly to run with Angus heifers.

Pat Kenny, Moylough, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway saw his Sympa son Groe Goldie selling at €3750 to Thomas Maher, Athenry, Co. Galway. Goldie who is by a Ferry dam Groe Vichy, had a 5-star SBV of €99 and had top ratings in Weanling Export and Beef Carcass.

First time exhibitors Fergal & Liam McDermott, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan saw their 1st prize winning entry Aughnacreevy Fred selling at €3700 to Martin Collins, Menlough, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. This Roundhill Botan son and by a Lino sired dam Gallaway Chloe sold with a 5-star SBV of €109.

Selling at €3600 was Clooncara Limousins Fonzie from David Cogan, Ballyglass, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. Another 1st prize winning son of Rocky and by a Litron dam Gortneskehy Teresa, Fonzie came to the ring with a 4-star SBV of €79 and heads to Patrick Water, Ballintogher, Co. Sligo.

Also selling for €3600 was Aloor Fran from the herd of Patsy Creighton. Aloor Fran is the twin to Aloor Felix, by Wilodge Vantastic and Aloor Amanda, Fran sold to with a 5-star SBV of €150 to Michael Sweeney, Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny.

A number of animals sold at €3500, the first one being Ballinascraw Flame from John & Stephen Lynch, Ballinascraw, Ballinalee, Co. Longford. Flame who is by a home bred sire Ballinascraw Drogba, (by Tatoumh), and the dam Mill Farm Limousin Urika, sold with a 3-star SBV of €72 to P.J. Weirs, Knockanaulin, Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Michael Kiernan, Augharan, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim received €3500 for Gallaway Filbert from Paddy Clarke, Lissavalley, Tuam, Co. Galway. By the Sersia sire Neuf and a Villy sired dam Drumeel Tabitha, Filbert had a 2-star SBV of €51 and top traits in Daughter Fertility, Calving Difficulty and Gestation Length.

Also selling at €3500 was Rathlee Garrett from Daniel Kirby, Easkey, Co. Sligo. This Sauvignon sired son and by a Dauphin daughter Rathlee Alma had a 4-star SBV of €80 and heads to Donal O’Brien, Kilfenora, Co. Clare.

The final animal to sell at €3500 was the Reserve Junior Champion Springvalley Griffin from Michael Reynolds, Ballymakea Beg, Mullagh, Co. Clare. Selling with a 5-star SBV of €103 and by a Highlander dam Spring Valley Patricia, Griffin was purchased by Anthony Connolly, Killina, Gort, Co. Galway.
