Athenry sale reaches high clearance and averages

The strong trade that has been a feature so far in the 2011 Irish Limousin Cattle sales was once again evident in the Society’s official sale in Athenry on Thursday 28th April. Limousin reach the top at Easter Monday Tully Elite Sale

Limousin achieved the top three prices at the Elite bull sale at the Tully performance station in  Tully on Easter Monday.

The second Irish Limousin Cattle Society Premier sale was held on Monday 11th April in Roscrea mart Co Tipperary. This new additional sale saw a smaller number of animals entered in comparison to the previous March sale however a very steady  trade resulted in a 88% clearance in the males with an average price of € 2882. Greenhill Emperor tops Roscrea Premier Sale March 2011 at €8,200

The long journey from Cardonagh Co Donegal paid off for breeder Mr John Green when he saw his December 09 born bull selling for the top price of €8200. Having stood Reserve Junior male champion earlier in the pre sale show this Wilodge Tonka son bred from the Meridien  dam Greenhill Unique Et and with a 5 star Suckler Beef Value of €111 had many admirers and met a flurry of bids before eventually being purchased by Mr Colin Watts, Pytindu Farm, Llanddew, Brecon, Wales for his commercial herd. Regardless of breeding, quality, figures or stars all young bulls and indeed cull bulls have a minimum value. This value is what can be achieved at slaughter. At todays factory prices, and all indications are that prices will rise further, most will be surprised at what Limousin Bulls will return. Ear to the Ground

Irish Limousin breeders on RTE’s Ear to the Ground:

This weeks episode sees the Ear to the Ground team travel to Limoges, home  of Limousin cattle. Darragh Mc Cullough  meets some of the Irish breeders who come here to buy. Darragh will also visit the Headquarters of Limousin Genetics the  nerve centre of pedigree Limousin breeding where they keep detailed  databases on the genetic make-up of the animals. Tullow Sale

Tullow Society Sale 2010:

The final official Limousin sale of 2010 was held in Tullow mart on 15th December. Having been cancelled on two occasions due to bad weather and with some parts of the country still experiencing poor conditions the number of customers present was rather small. However despite this a number of good prices was achieved resulting in an average price of € 2341 for males and a clearance of 41%. Read more >>>

North East Limousin Calf Finals 2010:

Oldcastle show in county Meath was the venue for the 2010 North East Calf Finals on Sunday 26th September. The judge for this event was Ian Nimmo owner of the Maraiscote herd  in North Lanarkshire. Mr Nimmo  a  successful  breeder in both the  show and sales ring is the owner of the Highland show winning sire Virginia Andy,  a bull that he who had  purchased from local breeder Leo McEnroe. Premier Sale Roscrea

Premier Sale Roscrea 25th October 2010

The third and final Limousin Premier sale of 2010 at Roscrea mart saw a packed ringside with a tremendous trade on the day. This sale was always going to attract some high prices due to the fact that some of the entries had a very successful show  season.

Top price on the day of € 17,000 went to Baileys Elderado bred by the highly priced  Queenshead Altea  and out of the successful Baileys Aubergine, combining Grahams Samson and Greensons Gigolo in the back pedigree. Elderado had been bred in the herd of Tom Bailey Batterstown Co Meath and purchased by Gerard Davis Ballinalee. Having being placed Senior male champion in the pre sale show by Mr Eric Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle Cumbria Elderado heads to the very famous Grahams herd of Mr Robert Graham , Bridge of Allan , Stirling, Scotland. Commercial Heifer Sale

Positive start to Cork Limousin Club first autumn commercial heifer sale!

Following on from their successful commercially focussed field evening on the farm of Michael J. O’Regan, Skibbereen, in July, Monday October 18 saw the Cork Limousin Club host their first ever commercial breeding heifer autumn sale. The sale was held in conjunction with Cork Co-op Marts in Bandon. Considered a bold move, to hold a Limousin heifer sale in the heart of dairy country, the sale was a success. Satisfaction with the heifers presented was expressed by discerning local suckler farmers who competed strongly for the quality lots on offer.  Read more >>>

Irish Limousin slaughter judging competition

During the National Ploughing Championships in Athy the Irish Limousin Cattle Society had two fit to slaughter Limousin x heifers on display and visitors to the stand were asked to estimate the slaughter weights and grade. The competition was free to enter with prizes of Roscrea Premier Sale Voucher and AI Straws. There was a huge number of entries. The heifers kindly supplied by Mr Patrick Peters Nenagh were slaughtered at Ashbourne Meats Roscrea. Ashbourne Meats in conjunction with Eurovee pay a premium for Limousin x cull cows and retired Limousin stock bulls. Read more >>>

Anglo Irish YMA Finals Beef Expo 2010

During Beef Expo The Young Limousin Breeders ran the Anglo Irish Stock Judging Competition. This was a very high profile and prestigious international event involving teams from Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. After some fierce competition and excellent displays the prestigious team event was won by Northern Ireland represented by William McElroy, Kim Nicholsan Steele and Gary Hume. Beef Expo 2010

Irish Limousin had a very successful Beef Expo in Kilkenny over the weekend of Sat Oct 9 and Sun Oct 10. In what was a show case for Pedigree Beef Breeding in Ireland over 100 Limousin cattle participated.

North West Club

North West Club Limousin Open Day on the farm of Tom Feehan Cross Kilmeena Westport Co. Mayo

On Sunday 3rd October the North West Limousin Club held an open day on the farm of Tom & Marion Feehan Cross, Kilmeena ,Westport ,Co Mayo.The Cross herd which is over shadowed by the famous Croagh Patrick mountain was founded in 1990. Tom & Marion decided from the start that this herd was going to be based on quality. In the early years a number of breeding females were purchased at sales throughout the country and then a very strict breeding programme of only using the top AI sires was implemented. Ballyfin Herd Dispersal Sale

Ballyfin Dispersal Sale had 100% clearance on Saturday 25th October at Kilkenny Mart with 32 pedigree Limousins on offer with an average of €2,440.

In the Limousin section there were 26 females with 19 cows or heifers either in calf or fit for service with a price range from a top price of 6100 euro's to 1200euro's (this a cow scanned not in calf) each with an average price of 2818 euro's.

There were 7 young Limousin heifers between 6 and 12 months and these ranged in price from 3700 euro's to 950 for a 6mth old calf with an average price of 2050 euor's.

There were 6 young Lim bulls between 6 and 12 months and these ranged in price from 2600 to 1200 with an average price of 1691 euro's.

 

 

 

Genetic Advantage Sale

Quality & Value at Castleview and Roundhill Limousin Heifer Sale:

The third sale from Roundhill and Castleview herds last Friday evening in front of a packed ring side at Roscrea mart saw a very strong trade with 50 lots of deep pedigreed Limousin females selling to average €2,640 and achieving a clearance of over 90%. Quality and value was in abundance as was demand from pedigree and commercial breeders with the top 9 lots who had the combination of pedigree, index and show appeal averaging €5,000 and many heifers with a high Replacement and Suckler Beef Value Index selling for between €1,500 and €2,000. Irish Limousins at National Ploughing Match:

The Irish Limousin stand at the National Ploughing Championships in Athy will have a commercial focus. The Limousin breed is more relevant today than ever, its versatility and ability to suit all markets give it enormous commercial relevance. The cattle on view will demonstrate the strong maternal aspect of the breed complimented by easy calving, muscling ability, finishing qualities and excellent kill out all of which give the farmer many market options.

On view will be cows with calves, weanlings from available AI Sires, finishing cattle and a selection of pedigree animals.

A free to enter competition will be run during the event, a pen of fit for slaughter cattle will be on view and participants will be asked to estimate kill out weights and grade. The winners will receive vouchers for the Limousin Premier Sales to be held on the 25th of October in Roscrea.

The new Irish Limousin web site will be launched at the Ploughing Championships. Its use, features and options will be demonstrated during the event.

Details and information on up and coming Irish Limousin events will be available. These events include The Premier Sale at Roscrea, Tullow Sale on the first of December, Commercial sales in October and The Beef Expo event on Sunday October 10th in Kilkenny.

Limousin breeders and users will be on hand to explain the merits of the breed and to advise in relation to breeding strategies.

2010 has been a very successful and busy year for Irish Limousin. Limousin has performed well at shows and sales throughout the country. Breeding developments are dynamic with ongoing improvements in docility and advances in genomics.

Members of the North East Limousin Club recently photographed at the launch of their calf finals with Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and food, Mr. Brendan Smith TD. The calf finals will take place on Sunday 26th September at Oldcastle Show, Co. Meath. This will see 4 calf classes take place, 2 for males and females born between 1st September 2009 and 31st December 2009 and 2 for calves born in 2010. Limerick Show 2010:

After the busy day at Cappamore show it was on to Limerick Racecourse in Greenmount Park, Patrickswell for Limerick Show. The show which runs for two days - confined the cattle showing to Sunday. There was a large turnout of cattle from near and far for the many classes with a number of All Ireland championships, which had big entries and very good prize money on offer. The 56th Annual Agricultural show in Cappamore was held on Wednesday 18th August 2010. The show is very popular by exhibitors of all breeds, with cattle travelling from near and far to compete in its many prestigious classes. Cappamore Show stages 4th All Ireland Heifer and Bull Derby:

A crowded ringside saw the 4th annual All Ireland Limousin Heifer and Bull Derby take place at Cappamore Show, Co. Limerick on Wednesday 18th August 2010. The All Ireland Derby is a cross border initiative between the Irish Limousin Cattle Society and the Northern Ireland Limousin Club. National Limousin Show

Millbrook Celine is 21st National Limousin Show champion:

The 21st National Limousin Show took place at the National Livestock Show Tullamore on Sunday 8th August 2010. The standard of cattle and number of entries was excellent with over 130 Limousin cattle entered and 118 present on the day in the 32 classes. The Tullamore National Livestock Show proved to be an excellent venue with everyone having a busy but enjoyable day. The weather was lovely and large crowds were in attendance. South West Limousin Club Field Evening Castleisland Mart July 2010:

The South West Limousin club held a very successful field evening in Castleisland Mart on Saturday 31st of July. The main attraction of the field evening was the club calf championship, with in excess of forty calves on display.

Cork Limousin YMA class proves a popular feature at Barryroe show

The Cork Limousin club hosted yet another successful YMA class at Barryroe show on Saturday July 10th. The first of the club’s two annual YMA events, once again proved very popular among the club’s young members. This year, youngsters as young as 7 participated; with the focus on enjoyment and building confidence. Five budding breeders made their showing debut at Barryroe: Michael and Florence Wycherley, Tara and Evan Buckley and Niamh O’Mahony. YMA Finals 2010

National YMA Finals Bridgetown Show 2010:

The South East Clare Show located in picturesque Bridgetown in Co. Clare was the venue for the 2010 National  Irish Limousin  Young Members workshop hosted by the Clare Limousin Club.

In addition to the usual competitions, this time there was also a team event which consisted of teams of four representing the different club areas, teams consisted of four YMA members with one member having to be under 16 years of age. Read more >>>

Cappamore Show 2010:

Cappamore Show on Wednesday the 18th August 2010 has the privilege of hosting the All Ireland Limousin heifer and bull Derby.This is a much-coveted competition with heifers and bulls competing from all over the island of Ireland. This completion was held in Clogher Valley in 2009 and this year it is back south.

While the Derby is pre-qualified there will be a total of 76 cattle classes on show, for nine different breeds incorporating a large fat stock section.The show at Cappamore is now in its 56th year and is always a great day out for the whole family with lots of stalls, craft-work and lots of animals on display and along with the cattle there is also a horse show. National Limousin Show

National Limousin Show - Tulalmore 8th August 2010:

This year the 21st National Limousin Show will take place in conjunction with the Tullamore National Livestock Show on Sunday 8th August.  We are expecting a large entry to this show and would be hoping that this will be a social event for all Limousin breeders. Due to the large number of classes we anticipate that the judging will start at 10 am.

Enniscrone Show Co Sligo on Saturday 28th August will host the Northwest club calf championships. There will be six classes, three male and three female for calves born after the 1/9/2009. The calves will be divided into equal classes after the entries have been received. In June 2010 a number of Council members along with the secretary traveled to France to inspect progeny of Sersia sires. The changeable weather last week did not dampen the spirits of the Irish Limousin breeders whose cattle successfully competed with the best of the Northern Irish at the Royal Ulster Show in Belfast. Roscrea March Premier Sale Report:

The Irish Limousin Society 2010 Sales kicked off in Roscrea on Monday 1st March with a bumper entry of 137 males and 44 females. Interest was once again high amongst UK breeders with a total of 21 lots sold for export, 15 males and 6 females. The sale of males resulted in an average of €3108 ranging from €1,800 to ‚€10,000, while females averaged €3,313 ranging from €1,850 to €6,500.  Read more >>>
