The Millbrook Herd

The Millbrook Herd was established in 1986 with the purchase of four females from the Curraghgrange herd of Joseph Mc Grath, Cromlo, Co. Kildare. These four comprised two heifer calves, one in-calf heifer and one young cow. Three of these animals are the originators of all the cattle in the Millbrook Herd. With one of the calves having a temperament problem, having calved down for the first time, as it was a problem in the breed. We culled her, thus putting docility at the top of our agenda. I think that is I due to this attitude that any visitors to the herd always comment on how quiet the cattle are in the herd. Over the past 16 years, the herd has established itself as one of the leading herds of Limousin cattle in Ireland if the British Isles.

Of the three lines of females, the Tulipe line was the best. Using this cow for embryo work increased her production and also led to a quick expansion of the quality of females in the herd, some of which are still breeding today. The success of any herd is not down to the animals purchased, but those carrying the name of the Herd, in this case Millbrook. At Millbrook we breed cattle that always find favour with the commercial and pedigree breeder.

Limousin that are correct, with good growth rate, good docility, good muscle, ease of calving, great breed characteristics and most of all, have to be economic, both to ourselves as breeders and to those we sell cattle to. The following pictures chronicle some of the cattle bred at Millbrook, their success with us with some of their new owners.
